Here is the same M45 image but this time properly processed strictly in Photoshop CS3. The previously super-stretched image was just to show the dim nebulosity (gas and dust) surrounding the cluster. I included the full size image, there a few galaxies in there but they are small and hard to find.

I imaged M45 on January 1, 2011 and didn't process the data until today. This is a super stretched image that shows some of the dust surrounding the open cluster. This was imaged with the Explore Scientific 80mm APO with the Televue TRF2008 FR/FF at an effective F4.8 and a focal length of 385mm. The ES scope was guided by the 10" LX200 @ F6.3 with the Meade DSI roughly polar aligned. The imaging camera was the Canon XSi (450D - Hap Griffin Modded). The image itself consists of 42-4 minute light frames @ ISO 800, 5 Dark frames, 75 flat frames and 75 bias frames. Temp ranged from 7F to 1F during imaging. Processed in Images Plus 3.82a, post-processed in Photoshop CS3.

Hey, it's galaxy season again. I thought I would try for M104 again, last years images of the sombrero we not so good, this year's is a little better. This is with the CGEM, CF C8 @ F6.5, Canon XSi, Orion ST80 and SSAG (Guiding). 22-5 minute lights, 5 Darks, 75 Flats. Processed in Images Plus 3.82a and post processed in Photoshop CS3.

Got some new gear up and running (finally) after sitting in boxes for months. The following photo is NGC 4565 (Caldwell 38) imaged on 3-10-10 at approximately 10:00 PM. Equipment used was CGEM Mount, CF C8 SCT scope for imaging, Orion Short Tube 80mm ACHRO with Orion SSAG Autoguider, Camera used is the Canon XSi (450D) with the Meade .63 Focal reducer at 90mm from the Camera CMOS (approximately F6.5). Image acquired with Canon EOS Utility. 26 - 3 Minute light subs, 5 Darks and 75 Flats. Pre-processed (calibration, aligning and stacking) in Images Plus 3.82a, Post Processed in Adobe Photoshop CS3. I am really happy with all of the new gear and how well everything works. This was my very first experience with a GEM computerized mount.

NGC 3628 is a galaxy about 35 mly away in Leo. It is a spiral galaxy seen edge-on with a prominent dust lane crossing its central bulge & fanning out near the galaxy's edge. The image was processed from about 6 hours of LRGB expsures. I attempted to bring out some details in the dust lane.

Here's an image from 12-27-10 that did not turn out as well as I had hoped. It's IC405 and IC410 taken with the Explore Scientific 80mm APO with the Televue TRF 2008 Flattener/Reducer and the Canon XSi (F4.8 and 385mm FL). Guided with the Meade 10" LX200 with the Meade DSI at F6.3. 32-300 second light subs, 25 dark subs, 100 bias and 100 flats. At the temp it was taken (5 degrees F) the LED panel didn't work very well nor did I let it warm up a bit before using it. Also, these targets need more integration time, they are quite dim. Pre-Processed in Images Plus 3.82a, Post Processed in Photoshop CS3

Here's an Image I took on January 1, 2011 with the Explore Scientific 80mm APO with the Televue TRF 2008 Field Flattener/Reducer making it effectively F4.8 and a focal length of 385mm. Guided with the 10" Meade LX200 ACF at F6.3 with the Meade DSI camera and PHD. 35-2 minute subs, 15 darks, 100 flat frames and 100 bias frames. I did take shorter subs to tame the Trapezium but decided again putting in the work because of the satellite trails which are geo-sync satellites which proved impossible to remove from the finished product as well as in the pre-processing phase. Pre-Processed in Images Plus 3.82a, Post Processed in Photoshop CS3.

Here's an image I took of the Western Veil on August 3, 2010 and just got around to processing. Taken with the Meade 14" LX200 GPS in Alt-Az and hyperstar with the Orion Starshoot Pro V2 w/Baader UV-IR Filter. 100-35 second subs, 25 darks and 25 flat frames. Pre-Processed with Maxim DL Pro V5.14. Post processed in Photoshop CS3. I processed it as well as I could but I think it could be better.

Well, this is my first attempt at actually processing an astro pic. M42 is a great first place to start. My problem was mostly an unbalanced scope, which has been fixed since the image was taken. The other common problem for M42 is the very large contrast between the bright core and the fainter filaments of the nebula. This is actually a stacked product of 5 images ranging from 30 seconds to 4.5 minutes. I stacked them using the free counterpart to Photoshop called GIMP. Seemed to do quite well. More processing was required in MaximDL. The camera is a modified Canon 30D and shot through an 80mm Vixen apo mounted onto an LX200GPS 14" Meade. The Meade was used to manually guide the exposures.

IC2118 The Witch Head Nebula. This one is really a difficult object to image and I am not happy with the result. It took a tremendous amount of post processing and is so dim that I had to shoot AND process the object the previous weekend and compare star patterns to frame it. This is the best 56 of 65 subs plus 20 darks and 50 flats shot with a Canon 40D on a Celestron NS11CF with Hyperstar mounted on a Losmandy CG-11 and autoguided with an Orion DSCI-2. This was shot Friday night 11/5/10 from about midnight till 3:00AM
